The British Open, the oldest tournament in golf is commemorating its 150th anniversary with the first round starting today. This year’s event will be held at the famous Old Course at St. Andrews which has been in existence since the 1400s.
John Daly will make another exciting start at the British Open, after his surprising win at the Old Course fifteen years ago. However, Tiger Woods comback attempt will be the most anticipated turn up of the event. Woods has won the tournament each of the last two times when it was contested at St. Andrews. He posted his win in 2000 by eight shots against Thomas Bjorn and Ernie Els, and defeated Colin Montgomerie by five shots in 2005. Listed at +350, Woods is still a heavy favorite this week, regardless of his struggles this season.
J.H. Taylor, James Braid and Jack Nicklaus have also won the British Open twice on the Old Course. And, if Woods succeed this time as well, he will become the first player to win the tourney a third time.
Perceptibly, the Masters Champion Phil Mickelson, can outshine Woods in the world rankings for the No. 1 spot. Tipped at +1200, Mickelson’s odds are fairly close to Tiger, but the only thing that can go against him is his spotty British Open record
Camilo Villegas and Justin Rose will accompany Woods in the first two rounds. Rose is apparently the hottest golfer in the world and has posted two wins on the PGA Tour in the previous two months. Justin Rose (+2000) is another player who cannot be underestimated, seeing his past records at the Travelers with wins at the Memorial and AT&T. Moreover, Graeme McDowell (+2000), the winner of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach has also leaped into the Top 20.
